As We Were... A girl and her cat
The little yellow kitten was irresistible! My brother's friend was happy to see another of the barn kitties go to a good home...he was mine! Winks came into my life just after my 10th birthday. He was my playmate, cuddle buddy, my companion, leaving us peacefully while napping in one of his favorite spots after many wonderful years. The 10 years he was part of our family were memorable. A favorite memory includes Mama, a cake, and a cat. Winks made his way unnoticed into the dining room where Mama had just placed a freshly baked 3-layer pineapple cake. Winks decided that cake was too good to pass up. After eating almost the entire top layer, we had a very sick kitty and very angry Mama! Am sure he used up at least one of nine lives on that little indiscretion!
The love of ginger, yellow, or orange... whatever you happen to call them... cats is deep seeded and long held. Jane's Gus and Lucy remind of my dearest Winks. I do love reading about their antics. Jane, thanks for sharing!
Please visit Jane's As We Were to see more of who and where we were... back then.
The picture is courtesy of a life long friend. She scanned and sent this to me several years ago on my birthday... a dear, thoughtful friend!
What a wonderful story of your and the very naughty Winks. I don't want Gus and Lucy to read this, it might give them ideas.
ReplyDeleteThough i don't know who would be baking around here...
Thanks so much for sharing this picture and slice of your life.

Yes, naughty would be appropriate. I remember Mama saying that cat would send her to torment!
DeleteSuch wonderful memories of Winks, and adorable picture. You looks so happy.
ReplyDeleteI love orange cats too. One of my cats who disappeared was a big old orange tomcat. I went to the shelter specifically looking for an orange cat and he kept sticking his paw out of the cage at me.
Jen, I have had many pets... Especially cats growing up, but Winks was the very dearest. The picture was a nice reminder of carefree, happy growing up years.
DeleteAh, I love all of them -- orange, black, calico. They are just so special.
ReplyDeleteMe, too!
DeleteWhat a wonderful story of your special cat. Thank you for sharing it and the photo. Such special memories of our kitties!
ReplyDeleteThanks for coming by. This was fun!
DeleteThat was a sweet memory - and a very sweet photo!
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping in to share the memories!
DeleteJust so sweet! I'm a cat girl myself and I always love reading about Gus and Lucy too. :) What a sweet photo and lovely memories of your cute little Winks.
ReplyDeleteDeb, thanks for the kind words. I do miss my kitties! My son, daughter-in-love, and husband have cat allergies so no fur babies here, but Jane and Jen are kind to share their loves with us!
DeleteA girl and her cat: I love that photo of the two of you. I'm seeing some great skirts in these old photos!
ReplyDeleteYes, Shelley.. the fashions were awesome! This is actually a very pretty pink and green floral dress with the fitted waist and gathered skirt. My mother could sew any design that we saw in the stores. I was a lucky girl! Didn't realize it so much back then. Thanks for stopping in

ReplyDeleteI had to laugh at Winks "indiscretion". We were just chasing the puppy through the house after she stole a bag of dried apricots off the counter. Our little creatures keep us busy.
ReplyDeleteSuch a sweet story!
Carol... I can imagine the chase! Am wondering if the little rascal would have enjoyed the apricots. Who would have thought a cat would eat pineapple, so maybe!
DeleteNeat old picture. I like that your feet are so formally side-by-side lol. I have similar slightly out of focus pics of me clutching a cat or a puppy and squinting into the sun. Doesn't matter how poor the photo is because the memories are sharp and clear. Visiting from SmallButCharming's As We Were.
ReplyDeleteNo idea about my stance...however Mama was forever telling me to stand up straight and hold my shoulders up. This photo is more than likely a Polaroid. The friend who sent this was the only one of us who had the newest kind of camera...like magic, a photo in just minutes! Yes, the photos conjure quite clear, precious memories! Thanks for your visit!
DeleteI got my first dog for my 8th birthday and he was so much a part of our family. The story of winks was lovely.
ReplyDeleteGillx
Thanks, Gill. I haven't had a pet in many years, but my son and daughter-in-love have a little fellow, Rooney (can you tell the are soccer fans?), that is my gran-puppy.
DeleteDear Susan,
ReplyDeleteyou look very happy with your cat! The Adventure with the Pineapple Tart is funny - can understand that your mother was not that amused, but in the end it is a great story to be remembered. :-)
Britta.. Even Mama could laugh about the incident ...years later! Yes, very happy childhood in a wonderful very small town with awesome parents, brother, and lots of extended family! Appreciate the visit!
DeleteSweet memories and photo! Don't you just love getting some old photos, especially those you've not seen before!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Gert
Gert...I was tickled to receive this one from my now California friend. I didn't remember her even taking this, but it brought back sweet memories of my cat, the dress, and even those shoes! Too bad it wasn't in color, the dress was polished cotton in watercolor pinks and greens! Funny, I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday, but remember this! Thanks for your visit. Right back at ya with blessings...Susan
DeleteThis blurry old photo makes me smile; big smile straight to camera, holding a much loved pet, how many of us have a photo so similar to this one! (I'll post my version next!)
