FITH ... Peonies, please!

It's all because of JaneJenBow Street Flowers and countless others who posted photo after photo of beautiful... gorgeous... frilly... fantastic... peonies. The obsession began. Why have I never seen these marvelous flowers adorning yards and gardens in my neck of the woods... bushes of lush, lovely flowers... pink, white, red... so, so beautiful? Oh my goodness, could it be because I don't have any relatives or connections Up North... that is North of Atlanta? The unfortunate... sorry state of affairs... peonies do not like the hot, humid Deep South! Not to be dissuaded... I persevered... I searched and searched.. there must be some variety that would like its feet in moist, rich Southern soil. The eBay seller was kind... he didn't think I would be successful, but what the heck? I have wasted money before... and not for such a good cause... the pursuit of the perfect Southern Peony! Well, I have exactly cornered the market, but the peony crop went from 2 blooms in 2013, 2014 to a whopping 11 blooms in 2015! I have papered Facebook and Instagram with the photos... and even shared some last week in the previous blog post. But for you, Jane... here they are again... FITH with a haiku or two devoted to these lovelies!

  3. Oh Susan, I was so happy when I saw your name. You always make the party. So sweet of you.

And I'm happy to take my 1/100 of the credit for introducing you to peonies.

11? that's a good crop. For me feeling rich is having my own peonies to pick and place about the house. To walk by them and inhale that scent is worth all the money in the world.

    Yours are beautiful.

  4. I am surprised yet very happy for you that you could grow peonies Susan. They usually like the dormant period we have over winter here in the north (Ontario) but if you've mastered a plant to produce, enjoy them in the garden and in your grandmother's bud vase. There's hope for others now...:-)
Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday.

  6. Susan, you've successfully accomplished what I've been longing to do for the past 27 years - grow peonies!!! Yes, they are the most beautiful, fresh scented flowers of spring, are they not? I can feel your excitement over these gorgeous petals, something I have felt ever since I was a little girl growing up in Toronto Canada. In a few days, I, too, will be able to breathe in their sweet fragrance, and feast my eyes on their loveliness, as I will be in Ontario, just in time for their debut, most probably in late May or early June, according to how they've been developing over this very cold, long winter!

    CONGRATS! They're exquisite!

  7. They are just gorgeous photos and mosaics. I can't think of peonies without thinking about my sweet mom. She always had them growing on either side of the sidewalk in the front yard and as a girl, I would always remember picking them and bringing them in for bouquets...ants and all! They remind me of the tissue paper flowers that we used to make too.

  8. Hello Susan,
Well now it's time for Peonys Envy again!
Good for you for raising them way Deep Down South; I never realized it was that tricky there, not even after 7 years below the M-D line. I bet you have magnificent Rhodys, azaleas & camellias, don't you? In a month when we have peonies in full bloom here, I'll send you some photos.
    Happy Spring!
