Can Spring be far away?

This is the only bloom in the garden right now, 

but there are lots  more to come.

Valentine's Day... For the Birds

I Gave a Hundred Valentines

A Hundred did I say?

I gave a thousand Valentines

One cold and wintry day.

I didn't put my name on them,

Or any other words

Because my Valentines were seeds 

For February birds!

For many years I was a preschool teacher. IMHO, it is the BEST job in the world! Really... teaching 4 year olds! The enthusiasm, the curiosity, the boundless energy, the loving spirit, all make up the fun, fantastic 4 year old child! Were they always angels? Of course not, they were children, but the good far out weighed the naughty. "My children" have grown up to be teachers, doctors, nurses, lawyers, accountants, firefighters, police factory workers, farmers, mamas, daddies... the list goes on.

The little poem was an activity that I always did with the children before Valentine's Day. The day is about loving and sharing that love... not just candy and cards. For some reason, I remembered the poem and decided to gather a few pinecones, peanut butter, and bird seed. Sent a few of those Valentines to my fine, feathered friends and the results were so worth the effort! 

Of course, it wouldn't be Valentine's Day with hearts and flowers.

Flowers in the House...Tuesday Tulips

I am not sure what happened to Monday... it came and went in a blur. I thought retirement was suppose to be a mellow, go-with-the-flow time... NOT yesterday! Anyway... no excuse for not getting to the party on time.

No flowers here at the house, but Walmart came through with another lovely little bunch of pink tulips. Two weeks ago, I treated myself to a bundle of orange ones! Brought much delight. Didn't know $5.88 could bring so much joy!

Tomorrow is my mother's birthday so the pink tulips are in her memory. I shared a bit about her last year here.

Sunlit Sunday... & Rocking Chairs

The comfort and rhythm of rocking chairs plays an important part in my life. Throughout my growing up years, our home always had some sort of rocking chairs on the front porch. Family and friends spent idle time rocking, chatting, or just enjoying the sights and sounds of the world from our front porch. Following the family tradition, our front porch is also home to a couple of comfy rockers.

 

I have special memories of spending "rocking chair" time with a wonderful friend on her front porch. Over the years, we would rock and chat as our growing boys played in her front yard. She lost her battle with breast cancer four years ago. She left us much too young. I thought of Carol today as the sun cast its light across the empty rocker. I long to rock, chat, and enjoy the company of my very special friend. Carol's light still shines in the eyes of her son and daughter and in her precious mother... and in lucky friends like me who shared the rhythm of her life in a front porch rocker.

Sunlit Sunday... You don't know what you've got till it's gone..

It has not been a great week in Georgia... the understatement of my year. Cold weather is not a problem. We can cope... really, we can. Snow and ice throw us for a loop. We stew, fret, worry over what is to come. Anxiety and uncertainty prevail. Our Southern minds and hearts ... not to mention our infrastructure.. are just not equipped. Atlanta, the "other Georgia," was tied in knots. Government officials made terrible decisions that put many at risk. Not a pretty sight, but good folks with good hearts and helping hands made a bad situation at least tolerable. Michelle Sollicito who created "SnowedOutAtlanta" on Facebook was incredible. Social media at it's best! 

No gridlock down here in South Georgia. We stayed in, warm and cozy, and only ventured out to see the bit of snow that fell. A few icicles hung from the roof. No major interruptions to our life. The kids got two days out of school. Ice on the roads is nothing to ignore especially when most of us have no idea how to navigate. Glad our officials put the safety of our children first and kept those school buses off the roads.  

Luckily, no loss of power! With the exception of the fireplace, our entire household is electric. We could have spent a few chilly days if the wires had succumbed under the weight of the ice. My Sunlit Sunday offering pays homage to what we readily take for granted...  electric power, utility pole, and electrical wires. Standing proudly in front of our home.. it weathered the storm... and came through without fail! Thank goodness! Joni Mitchell, you were so right.."You never know what you got till it's gone"... so glad we didn't have to find out!
