Sunlit Sunday... & Rocking Chairs

The comfort and rhythm of rocking chairs plays an important part in my life. Throughout my growing up years, our home always had some sort of rocking chairs on the front porch. Family and friends spent idle time rocking, chatting, or just enjoying the sights and sounds of the world from our front porch. Following the family tradition, our front porch is also home to a couple of comfy rockers.

I have special memories of spending "rocking chair" time with a wonderful friend on her front porch. Over the years, we would rock and chat as our growing boys played in her front yard. She lost her battle with breast cancer four years ago. She left us much too young. I thought of Carol today as the sun cast its light across the empty rocker. I long to rock, chat, and enjoy the company of my very special friend. Carol's light still shines in the eyes of her son and daughter and in her precious mother... and in lucky friends like me who shared the rhythm of her life in a front porch rocker.

Join us for a look at Sunlit Sunday from all over the world! My Little Home and Garden is so kind to host this little glimpse of the sunshine in our lives. Have a lovely week...  check those ta-tas monthly and have those mammograms as directed... stay healthy! You are the sunshine in someone's life.. take care!

  1. Hi Susan, Beautiful post for Sunlit Sundays. My late mom and I always enjoyed rocking on the porch together. Lots of happy memories associated with rocking chairs.

  2. Rockers are so special. I think the rocking takes away stress and anxiety when we are talking with someone and this enables us to connect at a deeper level. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend.

  4. I remember being a child, curled up in my grandparents' rocker, next to the wood stove. I still have my own little rocker from when I was very young.

Susan, your line about sharing "the rhythm of her life in a front porch rocker" was very touching. I'm sorry for the loss of one so dear to you. Thank you for sharing memories of your friend at Sunlit Sunday and for the reminder to take care of ourselves.

    1. Karen...my brother and I had a child size rocker. Since he was older technically it was his! I loved it and made sure my children had one, too. Thank you so much for your kind comment!

  7. Hi Susan, when I read your line "Carol's light still shines in the eyes of her son and daughter and in her precious mother... and in lucky friends like me who shared the rhythm of her life in a front porch rocker," I cried. What a beautiful way to express your love for a friend. My mother-in-law died of breast cancer a few years ago. I still miss her a lot. She was a wonderful person and the ideal mother-in-law. Your post is beautiful. You are a beautiful person, Susan. (I am still crying; I am afraid I will be crying for a little bit longer after I sign off.)

    1. Christa...you are too kind. Cancer is such an insidious disease and devastating to the patient and the family. I am so sorry for your loss. Another good reminder to take card of yourself! Your kind comments are always appreciated!

  8. What a lovely memorial to your friend. I love the idea of sitting on a front porch like that but unfortunately the british don't use their front gardens like you. Maybe we should.

    1. Thanks for the visit, Gill. We have gotten away from this pleasure as well, with more homes having patios and decks off the back. However, older homes such as Carol's (The home had belonged to her maternal grandparents and was build early in the 20th century.) had lovely wide porches the width of the house... Perfect for a half-dozen rockers!

  9. Often I drive along the roads of North Carolina and see many rocking chairs on the front porches. Such a lovely tribute to a close friend. She sounds like she was loved very much and missed by many.

  10. Rocking chairs can have such meaning in family life - the nursing rocker that I used through my children's babyhood, the porch rocker, the rocker that my husband gave me for my 21st birthday (approaching antique status!). Your memories of your friend, and your time together, are just lovely.

    1. Totally agree about rocking chairs. The one I used with my now 42 year old baby girl was painted orange! Lovely memories...and yes, I understand all to well about my long-loved things reaching antique status!

  14. This is a lovely post to remember your friend – sorry about her passing - I understand your sadness.
We have five rocking chairs, different styles, and I like them all. We do not have much of a front porch, so they are inside. At an estate sale last week there was a beautiful wooden rocking chair for $45 and I was tempted to buy it but my husband stopped me – we have enough rocking chairs he said.

    1. Oh my... Can one have too many rockers? ;-) I understand, my husband has used the same reasoning on me! Thanks for your kind comment. Stay warm and take care!

  15. Dear Susan,
the rocking chair and the front porch - these are symbols for me when I think of the part of the world you live! So friendly, soothing, open and inviting.
I am sad to hear that you lost your friend.
As to rocking chairs: we once had one in Vienna style - and later a Scandinavian one, on which you could even nap (lying on the side!). That was very interesting built, but so big and heavy that it is now in the attic in Hildesheim.
I still remember the rocking of the narrowboat - very, very soft - and good for sleep. I wish you a fine week! Britta

    1. Britta... Definitely live in front porch rocker country! Your rocking chairs sound so unique! We had a bentwood rocker that would often pitch you forward if you sat down too quickly! Lesson learned on that one! Thanks for stopping in.
